As part of the accompanying Total Baroque program at the 53rd Varaždin Baroque Evenings, the first modern critically printed edition of the collection “Madrigali concertati” by Gabriel Usper, which was prepared and edited by Professor Ennio Stipčević and musicologist Ivana Petravić, was presented at the Croatian National Theater in Varaždin, in the Club Europa Media. The ceremony was held on Saturday, September 30th, 2023, in front of a nice number of audience, which followed with great attention the presentation of the new edition on the occasion of the 400th anniversary of the first printing of the aforementioned collection, which was published by the Matica Hrvatska Branch in Sveta Nedelja and the Croatian Music Center. The book was presented by the president of the Matica Hrvatska branch in Sveta Nedelja Ivana Juričić on behalf of the publisher, master of Musicology Ivana Petravić as editor of the edition, professor at the Music Academy of the University of Zagreb Mario Penzar as a reviewer, and editors of the edition Assist. Prof. Ph. D. Martina Mičija Palić and Robert Palić. In the musical part of the program, the audience was given a unique opportunity to listen to selected madrigals by Gabriel Usper performed by members of the Projekt Lazarus ensemble, sopranos Hana Ilčić and Petra Cik, under the artistic direction of maestro Darijan Ivezić. Special gratitude goes to Professor Ennio Stipčević, associate member of HAZU, musicologist and leading expert of the period of Croatian Renaissance and Baroque music, for whom this collection is one of the many discoveries in his long and fruitful career as a scientist and researcher, and which represents significant monument of Croatian and European early Baroque music. The publication of the collection “Madrigali Concertati” in contemporary printed form was made possible by the City of Sveta Nedelja, Zagreb County and the City of Zagreb, for which we express our sincere gratitude.
